OWOB Wine Club Selection for January 2012 is the 2008 1789 Pinot Noir. 1789 is a limited production Pinot Noir made by Isabelle Dutarte. Isabelle’s primary job is winemaker for DuPonte Cellars. The 2008 1789 is sourced from a 10 year old vineyard in the Chehalem Mountains. Exuding dark and lush red color, the 2008 has rich aromas of fresh cherry and black currant followed by hints of violets and chocolate. The palate expresses intense red fruit and spices with generous concentration and lovely finesse. The elegant structure is deep, round and polished only to be supported by well integrated, fine-grained tannins. Beautifully balanced, it has a lengthy finish with notes of blackberry and spicy toffee. This already complex and textured wine will only get more complex, nuanced and powerful during aging. We are loving this wine on the bar right now but patience will be rewarded with flavor development and texture.

Chosen #3 in Portland Monthly magazines review of 50 Willamette Valley Pinots the 1789 also scored well with Burgundy reviewer Josh Reynolds. “A very pretty and well-layered nose expresses beautifully notes of red and dark berry fruit, briar and earth hints. The elegant, pure and admirably refined middle weight flavors possess a beguiling and sophisticated mouth feel as well as fine depth and length. This graceful effort is really quite lovely and worth considering. And if this is the level of quality that we can consistently expect from Dutartre, this will be a winery to watch carefully going forward. 2013+” 91 points
